ABSTRACT

The liberal-communitarian debate occupies a very important place in the history of political philosophy. And it seems that the first debate had come to an end as Rawls accepted some of the social propositions. However, these results do not mean that it is right to discard the ‘unencumbered self’ and define the ‘encumbered self’ as our identity. Because there is indeed a problem with Sandel's metaphysical theory, especially in the 'self' debate, and the two selves do not remain in a dichotomous relationship. Therefore, this study examines the metaphysical problem of the 'self', a political subject, focusing on Sandel's assertions. Sandel argues that we must conceive of ourselves as related selves. However, the unencumbered self is a possible basis for discovering the encumbered self. For the encumbered self to exist, a transcendent, unencumbered self that discovers the world and me as an object is necessary. And the unencumbered self and the encumbered self go toward unification. ‘Unencumbered self’ destroys ‘encumbered self’ to overcome the contradiction, but in the end, ‘Unencumbered self’ faces the situation that only the independence of the object can confirm its existence. Therefore, the unencumbered self eventually acknowledges the existence of the encumbered self, and these two selves enter the relationship of mutual recognition, and they advance to unification.
