ABSTRACT

The game Daqiu, existing since the Tang Dynasty, is an ancient form of modern polo. Traditionally, it was believed to have been introduced from Tibet. It was however confused with the term ancient soccer which had been played since the 4th century BC in China and this foreign game was presented as such. Despite the fact that these two games showed no evolutionary relationship in their origins and rules, sinologists of all ages tried to assign affinity between them, causing confusion in ancient texts. Daqiu was often substituted by the term Jiju (擊鞠) and the latter was used with ancient soccer(蹴鞠) without distinction, thus creating more confusion. These games were compared to other board games for strategy, adding more confusion. This study tries to verify and distinguish these confusions in ancient documents. Having examined the mixed usage of the terms, this study has revealed that Chinese scholars’ claim, that Daqiu - that is polo - was originated in China, has no foundation.
