ABSTRACT

This paper recognizes the structure of speech sounds while contacting the heterogeneous Sanskrit language in East Asia, and reviews the process of creating phonetic characters as the concept of speech was imported into Joseon. In order to properly identify phonetic characters created through these cultural exchanges in East Asia, a macroscopic view of the entire East Asian civilization is needed beyond the “modern” point of view. “Modern times” requires a nation to be composed of a single ethnic group, objectifying the “Han people” as a single ethnic group in China. However, the “Han people” are constructed with ancient multiracial communities. In addition, “Modern times” asks a country to have only one language, but East Asia had used “Chinese characters” that embrace both the “difference” and “change” in their pronunciation and had pursued an artificial and ideal phonological system that can be used beyond time and space. Eventually, East Asia was a cultural community in which each member played a role in the cultural development of East Asia. To expand and enrich cultural exchanges in East Asia in the future, comprehensive discussions beyond “Modern times” are needed.
