AB - In the 1990s, with the establishment and promotion of the market economy, social life underwent profound changes, and this transformation inevitably had a significant impact on the cultural field, bringing about unprecedented creative freedom. Economic freedom gave rise to intellectual freedom. Against this backdrop, a large number of outstanding literary works emerged during the 1990s, with the discovery and portrayal of the “individual” becoming a subject of great interest.
As one of the key works from the Shaanxi Army’s Eastern Expedition, White Deer Plain is epitomized by Bailu Village in the Guanzhong District of Shanxi Province. Compared to directly studying a historical microcosm, White Deer Plain more intuitively showcases the changes in individual fates against the backdrop of specific historical periods. The characteristics and psychological states of the novel's characters are particularly worth exploring, and their depiction is inseparable from the historical environment in which they exist. In turbulent times, their fates serve as a typical representation of the circumstances faced by most people of that era.
Freud divided the mental structure into the conscious, preconscious, and subconscious (including both the unconscious and subconscious), emphasizing the importance of the subconscious mind as being even more critical than consciousness itself—the true core of the human psyche. Therefore, it is possible to deconstruct the psychological structures of the characters using Freud's psychoanalytic theory to explain the mechanisms underlying their complex mentalities when confronted with various situations.
