AB - This paper starts from the asymmetrical phenomenon between the Chinese element ‘才’ in the construction ‘才+VP’ and its corresponding elements in Korean, as well as the limitations of existing research. It utilizes semantic map theory to explore the semantic distribution mechanisms of ‘才’ and its Korean counterparts. First, through a formal analysis of the ‘才+VP’ construction, the study identifies that ‘才’ primarily corresponds to the Korean elements ‘방금’, ‘이제(야)’, ‘비로소’, ‘겨우’, ‘(이)야말로’, as well as the modal adverbs ‘전혀’ and ‘절대’.
Second, the paper systematically compares ‘才’ in Chinese with its corresponding Korean elements across four dimensions: dynamic meaning, tense meaning, aspectual meaning, and modal meaning, revealing their functional characteristics at different semantic levels. Lastly, by employing semantic map theory, this study visualizes the semantic commonalities and differences between ‘才’ and its Korean counterparts, clearly illustrating the relationships and semantic structures between the two.
