AB - This article examines the morphological, phonological, and semantical characteristics of newly coined Chinese words composed solely of numbers and signs, which were created in Taiwan between 2018 through 2023. These terms were collected from internet forums, social networking sites, the PPT internet community site, TVBS news, and Yahoo news, among others, along with their applications in both online and offline communications. Moreover, it explores how these compound words comprising more than three syllables enhance effective and economical communication, while further promoting innovative methods of language synthesis for future neologism. This study is divided into two sections based on morphological traits and functions. The first segment of the study analyzes newly coined compound nouns, which encompass multiple meanings conveyed by metonymy; some evolve into proper nouns, gaining much broader usage in daily communication. The second part analyzes newly coined words whose meanings are expressed through homophonic puns (xieyin). Finally, this study suggests that the new words reflect synchronic linguistic changes in Taiwan, which subsequently lead to diachronic changes, facilitating their wider adoption.
The analysis of these words will serve as significant linguistic and cultural resources to predict viable models for developing future coded languages and effective communication signs.
