ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the adjuncts to head act of thanking in Chinese speech acts of directives. According to previous research, expressions of gratitude function as a politeness strategy in response to past action, whereas speech acts of directives pertain to future action. Due to this temporal contrast, gratitude expressions and speech acts of directives are considered incompatible in a single utterance. However, in Chinese discourse, it is possible to observe gratitude expressions immediately following speech acts of directives. This study posits that the adjuncts to act of thanking in Chinese speech acts of directives serve, not only as a politeness strategy, as previously discussed, but also fulfill a strategic function aimed at conveying the speaker’s emotional stance while enhancing the effectiveness of the directive's execution. By analyzing the pragmatic characteristics of adjuncts to act of thanking speech acts across different linguistic contexts, this research aims to contribute to the study of speech acts of directives strategies and provide insights for Chinese language education.
