ABSTRACT

The poetic works of local writers from Guangxi during the Ming dynasty form a vital part of Guangxi’s regional literary history, marking the rise of a self-aware local literary tradition. A review of their composition and creative practices yields several conclusions. First, these poets formed a community largely shaped by the civil service examination system, supported by family lineages and multi- ethnic participation. They were mainly concentrated in the culturally developed and well-connected areas of northern and southeastern Guangxi, showing how geography, economy, and education influenced literary activity. Second, their poetry covered diverse themes and styles. While continuing classical lyrical traditions, they also adopted locally distinctive forms such as “Eight Scenic Poems,” integrating strong regional flavor and real-life concerns into genres like exchange poems, travel poems, farewell poetry, and meditative pieces. Finally, their works highlight clear regional identity and social awareness. These poets portrayed local landscapes, preserved cultural values, expressed loyalty to the state, and reflected contemporary social realities through their verse.
