ABSTRACT

This study examines 29 poems by Yi Saek that feature the term “gentleman(君子)” in their titles. Through close reading of the texts and consideration of his biographical context, it systematically analyzes these works from the three dimensions of Social Integration(入世), Social Survival(處世), and Social Withdrawal(出世), thereby deciphering the internal logic of his “gentleman” poetry. Yi Saek studied at the National Academy of the Yuan Dynasty and presided over ritual administration for over three decades in the late Goryeo period. As a great Confucian scholar and literary figure, his poetry profoundly reflects his inheritance and practice of Confucian thought. Statistics show that the most frequently cited allusions in these poems are, in order, from the Analects, Mencius, Book of Rites, Book of Documents, Book of Songs, and Book of Changes, with occasional references to Zhuangzi, Han Yu, and Tao Qian, indicating that his thought is core rooted in pre-Qin Confucianism of Confucius and Mencius. In terms of poetic form, Yi Saek predominantly used the old-style pentasyllabic verse, utilizing its relatively free rhythm and parallelism to express his ideas forcefully.
