ABSTRACT

Theory of secularization has presupposed that religion would be privatized in modern world. Yet since the late of 20th century, religions have sought to find a new role in the public arena in different ways from the established one. As a result of it, people realized the importance of religious activities to shape meanings of their social life. In this sense, recently increasing interest in the public theology has a lot of social and theological significance. Public theology tries to restore the public role of Christianity which has been shrunk in modern times. To do so, two things have to be considered; First, it should go beyond the ideal of Christendom in this pluralistic society. Second, especially in Korean situation, public theology has to be practiced in corporation with a lot of civil cultural movements, because those have played a great role to make progress with democracy in Korean society. So public theology in Korea has to be practiced culturally to create the alternative image and narrative derived from the Christian tradition and values.
