ABSTRACT

The statement that “Suicide is unforgivable sin” has been spreading in Korean church for long time. It causes a lot of bitterness and suffering for the bereaved, although it might have preventive effect against suicide. But it needs to be theologically analyzed whether or not it is biblically and morally grounded. This article first of all surveys the decisive ecclesiastical statements regarding suicide in the councils in church history throughout the medieval age. It also deals with doctrines of mortal sins, the relationship of salvation and suicide, and unforgivable sins. In addition, it examines its relationship in the light of the doctrine of perseverance of the saints and God’s eternal decree, which are contained in a significant Protestant confession of faith, Westminst Confession of Faith. Finally, on the basis of this theological conclusion, it suggests some guidelines for pastors to take care of the bereaved and some preventive ways against suicide.
