ABSTRACT

Christian ethics became the principle of enlightenment for Koreans during the Japanese colonial period in the Korean missionary history, Christianity presented equality and a new paradigm of social ethics. The ethics of women’s rights, equality between men and women, and Christian love have boosted public appeal and served as a catalyst for the spread of Christian social ethics. Thus, this paper traces the process of the construction of Soongsil School to the decision of the closing school and examined the teaching philosophy and Christian ethics of the missionaries who headed Soongsil University. William M. Baird established Soongsil College in order to cultivate human in accordance with Christian belief and ethics. R.O. Reiner built the dormitory and learning center and laid the external foundations for growth to the modern university. Samuel A. Moffett emphasized that according to Christian values and faith ethics, the university became maintained, being under the oppression of japan. And George M. McCune enforced they refused the visits to the shrine and had to put the purity of faith in the value of education and Christian ethics. Soongsil College was established and was improved, as building an the educational system, in accordance with Korean missionaries’ educational philosophy and their thought of Christian ethics.
