ABSTRACT

This paper proposed the re-memory or memory reconstruction of the Korean church’s collective memory as a methodology to promote understanding of North Korea and communism and alleviate hostility between conservatives and liberals. To this end, the difference of response between the world church and the Korean church was analyzed. This paper also reflected the problems of anti-communism in the Korean church and considered the significance of the unification campaign of the liberals as well as the evangelical unification campaign of the conservatives. The two camps opened the door to unity with a drive to help North Korea in the 1990s, and foreigners and overseas Koreans have served as a bridge for unity. The church’s unity can be an essential prerequisite for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula. Thus, the South Korean church should overcome the dichotomy between good and evil views on North Korea and communism, making efforts to overcome the conflict over differences in views of North Korea by summoning and sharing memories of the united churches. Re-memorization, which aims for reconciliation and peace, can serve as a practical basis for the Korean Church to contribute to peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula.
