ABSTRACT

This paper aims to build theology as a semantic system of badal based on the usage of badal in the Old Testament and scrutinize its implications for social ethics. To this end, this researcher made use of the perspective of literary criticism as synchronic approach. In addition, in order to construct the theology of badal, this study referred to the principles of biblical interpretation suggested by L. Berkhof: grammatical, historical, and theological interpretation. The social ethical problems in badal's meaning system are explained by the ethical transformation and the ideological distortion of holiness, the holiness of time and space contained in the Sabbath, and the inclusive and exclusive attitude of faith communities toward foreigners. The boundary setting by badal is variable, depending on historical situations and Zeitgeist, and is associated with the problem of justice.
