ABSTRACT

This article is a study on Celtic creation spirituality, an ancient form of Christianity that centers around justice, tolerance, equality for women, creativity, and a love of nature. It finds deep spiritual meaning in nature and its changes. Hildegard von Bingen(1098-1179) was particularly influential in the creation spirituality and feminine ecological ethics of the movement. As the “grandmother of German Rhineland mysticism,” she expressed Celtic spirituality through music, paintings, and writings. Her creation spirituality is characterized by understanding the world through women’s intuition and emotions, and by symbolizing the woman’s body. She believed the universe was a living mother’s body and naꠓture was a loving lover. She also predicted the ecosystem crisis and emphasized that we must become “warriors of greening the earth,” who practice a creative spiritual life. Her creation spirituality implies an integrated model of ecotheology. This article will describe Hildegar’s ecological view of the universe and nature by analyzing visions in her works 『Scivias』and『Das Buch vom Wirken Gottes』. This study will also examine the characteristics of her ecological ethics through comparative research with women ecotheologians. Hildegard’s creation spirituality can serve as a guide for modern people facing ecological crises.
