ABSTRACT

This paper examines the ethical significance of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s concept of ‘Grenze (limit).’ To do so, it first briefly explores how previous researchers have approached Bonhoeffer’s concept of ‘Grenze.’ After such preceding research, this paper scrutinizes the ethically significant concept of ‘Grenze’ from three perspectives. Firstly, it discusses its significance from the perspective of cosmopolitanism. Secondly, it explores the ecological ethical perspective provided by Bonhoeffer’s concept of ‘Grenze.’ Lastly, it examines how Bonhoeffer’s concept of ‘Grenze’ can contribute to the ethics of responsibility, based on the principle of ‘critique and formation’ advocated by the ethicist Kang Won-Don in the responsible existence of Christians. In conclusion, the paper investigates the ethical significance of Bonhoeffer’s concept of ‘Grenze’ and its relevance to Korean society.
