ABSTRACT

‘Does the discipleship went to the monastery lead to a withdrawal of social spirituality?’ Benedict, read by applying MacIntyre’s waiting for ‘another Benedict,’ is an important sample of ‘monastic discipleship’ which sought to being disciple in times of crisis. Benedict was interested in the community for being disciple of faithful ‘following and imitating’ of Christ. Benedict’s emphasis on ‘hospitality’ reflects an interest in social spirituality, extending beyond mere humanities-based hospitality to encompass hospitality grounded in ‘being disciple.’ Nevertheless, there remain some areas that need to be improved. As Luther said, interest in discipleship of everyday life must be supplemented. If Korean Christianity concern on Benedict’s spirituality, it should transform the church into a ‘community of discipleship’ in daily life rather than reverting to the monastery.
