ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to examine such theme as abolition of war, peace, emergency situation found in 「Cheongnyun(Young People)」(1921-1940) and to draw out its contemporary implications. First, with regard to antiwar movement and cosmopolitanism, Forsdiek explicitly justifies abolition of war for the reason of cruelty, crime against humanity, unstoppable genocide. In the same vein, Woonlyong convincingly argues that Christianity cannot be compatible with war in view of its tragic calamity caused to human life. Further, as an alternative action plan for the advancement of world peace, Park Jaeho puts foward respect for human dignity, Lee Daewi comes up with friendly competition to overcome harsh environment, and “Basis of World Peace” makes a suggestion of the theory of peace by assessing international economic, political, moral trends. Second, when confronted with emergency situation in the mid- and late-1930s, the majority of articles published by the journal 「Cheongnyun(Young People)」 deal with such topics as wartime system of Japan, justification of the unification of Japan and Korea as one body, devotion of people to the country, etc. Above all, improvement of living condition under emergency situations, prayer for the imperial Japanese army, inspiration of the unification of Japan and Korea as one body, full mobilization of national spirit become prominent. It can be argued that the journal 「Cheongnyun(Young People)」 adequately addresses core issues related to peace and war from the perspective of Christian ethics. In addition, the journal does not just approaches such tricky issues as war and peace from realistic point of view, but also examine them in terms of human nature and mind. In so doing, it makes a meaningful attempt to interpret from a Christian ethical perspective.
