ABSTRACT

Taking an ethical philosophical approach, this study aims to analyze Irenaeus’s view of Christian ethics shown in “Against Heresies”. Christian ethics is a multi-faceted system in which a spiritual ethic focuses on morality, sanctification, piety, righteous life, and the imago Dei. I considered the main discourses on the Christian ethics in “Against Heresies” as follows. First, the article centers the view of confrontation between norms and situations, the uniqueness of the Bible as the standard of truth, the authority of the Bible, sense of normality in recapitulation theory. Second, the article treats with the view of deontological ethics and teleological ethics around the apostolic faith, gospel, and tradition. Third, the article concentrates on the view of community ethics around the unity of gospel and truth. Fourth, on the basis of the main points of this study I proposed the reinforcement of ethics education, the activation of normative ethics, deontological ethics, and community ethics to Korean Christians.
