ABSTRACT

This paper reflects on the meeting of far right protestantism and 2030 male youth who supported 12.3 insurrection, by exploring emotion, culture and Christian ethics. Beyond the logic of exclusion, it suggests first addressing the existential crisis of young men in South Korea, with emphasis on healing, and the kingdom of God. 2030 male anxiety stems from the unceasing devaluation by neoliberal capitalism, rendering it vulnerable to the radical right. Uprooted young men advocate pre-modern patriarchy and nationalistic masculinity to gain sense of superiority. Far right protestant churches rally their anger, intensifying anti-communism, ethnocentrism and authoritarianism. Wendy Brown’s analysis of neoliberalism, white supremacy and male radicalization in America traces nihilism that desacralizes all values except capital. Brown’s reading of ressentiment also helps identifying the widespread male hatred and destructiveness. However, such masculinity contradicts the fundamental teaching of Christ. Christian values teach prophetic critique, subversive love and service, in contrast to the violence of far right ideology. This study concludes by inviting 2030 male youth to be transformative agents, co-workers and the heirs to kingdom of God.
