ABSTRACT

This paper examines the ethical considerations of the use of AI like ChatGPT in sermon preparation and delivery in the Anthropocene era. This article provides an overview of how ChatGPT works, its strengths and limitations, and the potential ethical issues that arise when preachers utilize such digital tools. Key concerns include the risk of plagiarism, loss of authenticity, theological inaccuracies, and over-dependence on technology at the expense of spiritual preparation. While acknowledging that AI tools can be a useful aid, this article argues that faithful preaching requires human elements that AI cannot replicate - namely, wrestling with Scripture through prayer, engaging with the specific context of a congregation, and employing nuanced theological language. As an alternative approach, this study proposes a model of “theological preaching” based on the work of Stanley Hauerwas, which emphasizes Christ-centered biblical interpretation and narrative rooted in the life of the church. This study concludes that while ChatGPT presents challenges for preachers, it cannot replace the spiritual discernment, contextual understanding, and theological acumen required for meaningful sermon preparation and delivery. Preachers are encouraged to approach AI tools judiciously while prioritizing their unique role as interpreters of Scripture for their specific local communities.
