ABSTRACT

This study examines the ethical lessons of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew, which pursues the concept of ‘heavenly,’ for modern Christian communities. The ‘kingdom of heaven,’ recorded only in Matthew, explains the origins of the identity of the Matthew community. The Matthew community’s pursuit of “a better righteousness” and following the Father’s perfection is reflected in the Lord’s Prayer. The concept of heavenly rule expressed in the Lord’s Prayer is reflected not only in the prayers for the holiness of God’s name and the fulfillment of his kingdom and will on earth, but also in the prayers for daily bread and protection in our weakness. The ethics of forgiveness toward the community in the Lord’s Prayer symbolizes the practice of ‘a better righteousness.’ The Lord’s Prayer also calls modern Christians, praying to “our Father in heaven,” to be tolerant of others. The repeated emphasis on forgiveness urges the Christian community to practice the ethical practice of forgiveness.
