ABSTRACT

The concept of the Trinity has been understood as a Christian response to tensions between diversity and unity, and between individualism and totalitarianism. Yet speculative Trinitarian doctrines have often assumed a monarchical monotheism that historically legitimized authoritarian structures in church and society. In response, social Trinitarianism emerged, often adopting N. Fedorov’s thesis as a blueprint for addressing postmodern social problems. This article identifies critical limitations in Fedorov’s thesis and explores an alternative interpretation. It examines the “social Trinity” concept through John Zizioulas and Jürgen Moltmann, analyzing their Trinitarian proposals’ practical significance. Finally, after critically evaluating Fedorov’s thesis, it proposes a constructive alternative that interprets social Trinitarianism through the lens of Christian virtue ethics, specifically as imitating the kenosis of the Triune God.
