AB - This study explores Christianity’s public and political responsibility in contemporary conflictual society and proposes Christian agonism as a politico-ethical model toward this end. Taking Connolly’s agonism as a critical interlocutor, the study analyzes the process through which conflict is organized antagonistically through identity/difference, evil within faith, affect, and resonance machines, and theologically reconstructs the multilayered meanings of the Greek term agon.
Christian agonism consists of three forms: agon-agon, in which one contends responsibly with the other; agora-agon, which organizes public solidarity and participation; and agony-agon, which endures suffering and self-examination for the other. By testing these three forms through Moltmann’s political responsibility, eschatology of hope, and Trinitarian theology of the cross, this study proposes a political ethic through which Christianity may remain faithful to its own faith while existing as a responsible neighbor in a pluralized democratic society.
