ABSTRACT

Despite the fact that writing education is a core part of general education at university, the quality of education depends on whether the course itself is mandatory or not. Inje University had originally run the communication course as one of the mandatory subjects of general education in 2005, by establishing an undergraduate college that plays a leading role in providing general education courses. However, after the closure of the college, the standard of the university’s general education was relatively poor, and in order to improve the level of education, Inje University made an extensive change to the general education course in 2019. By taking the diagnosis carried out by the consulting group associated with the Korea National Institute for General Education as the main topic, this research paper formalized a comprehensive review on the operation of the ‘writing as a language expression’ course which is the mandatory general education course in communication. As a result, the procedural problems of ‘the Korea National Institute for General Education’ consulting were noted whilst also acknowledging the discrepancy in opinions regarding the writing course in communication studies and discovering the errors in course management that have previously been overlooked. The key idea highlighted in this research is that the principal agent that directly manages the subject must be equipped with the reorganization initiative, especially if the core subject is in any way similar to the communication course that is highly related to the mandatory general education course system. Moreover, a lecture program that associates the lecture plan, textbooks, and extracurricular activities from the beginning must be organized in recognition of the goal and philosophy of the university’s general education. In consequence, the introduction of such a mandatory or non-mandatory general education course system that best suits each university must be actively pursued.
