ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status and awareness of general education operation in colleges in oder to suggest the differentiated general education model that fits both of the essence of basic discipline curriculums and objectives of college education. Forty-two colleges responded the survey on three categories (I. General education system, II. Actual education status in colleges, III. Perception of innovation for general education). As a main result, first, it was found that only a few colleges have established separate school regulations as well as the managing department for general education. Second, in Colleges, there have been many courses for the subjects in the literacy area and liberal arts, and recently development of a variety of new subjects in general education curriculum is being required. Third, as the members in colleges agreed on the need for innovation in general education, it is necessary to realize the financial and institutional support for general education at the college level. Based on the understanding of the current status of general education in colleges, this study proposed the college model for general education which includes support system and operational processes.
