ABSTRACT

In this study, the design process of the class on language developed as a liberal arts course in the university was revealed, and the operation and results of the course were empirically analyzed. The goal of the course was to make students get interested in language. To this end, the content of the class was set focusing on ‘language’ itself, not on the internal domains of linguistics. The teaching method was mainly based on learner participation, and the evaluation criteria were also set reflecting this. This course was developed in 2019 and opened for the first time in the first semester of 2020. However, since classes were switched to non-face-to-face due to covid-19 in 2020, the class had to be modified to watching videos and performing assignments. During the subsequent five semesters, students revealed through lecture evaluations and surveys that this course helped them to increase their interest in language and to strengthen their humanistic thinking competencies.
