ABSTRACT

This study investigated and analyzed learners’ perceptions regarding the fairness, accuracy and effectiveness of peer reviews, correlations between peer and self-assessments after learners training for assessments in a TBL class of university general education. The study results showed: 1) Learners were very positive about the fairness, accuracy and effectiveness of peer review; 2) Peer and self-assessments had significant correlations with TBL learning performance, team satisfaction, and an individual's academic achievements; 3) Both in peer and self-assessments, the scores of “consideration” and “flexibility” were the first and second highest, which indicates that the main effects of TBL can be to develop learners’ abilities for consideration, flexibility, cooperation and communication skills; 4) Girls had higher scores in their self-assessments, individual achievements and team satisfaction than boys, which implies that TBL classes can be more efficient for girls. There are limitations to generalizing these findings, but the study results indicate that peer review trained is a useful tool as a performance assessment. Further research should be carried out and conduct appropriate teaching methods for TBL classes in liberal arts education.
