ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the aspect of critical thinking shown in debate argumentative writings by foreign students. In the results of this study, the total mean of critical thinking shown in debate argumentative writings was 9.833. The ranking of the mean for each sub-category of critical thinking was analytical thinking(M=4.167), inferential thinking(M=3.111), and holistic thinking(M=2.556). Especially, the mean of holistic thinking was the lowest, which means the foreign students experience difficulties in improving their critical thinking in the area of holistic thinking. Therefore, it is necessary to teach so that analytical thinking, inference thinking, and holistic thinking can be cultivated overall. And the curriculum should be operated so that Korean proficiency and critical thinking skills can be cultivated at the same time. Finally, this study is meaningful that it analyzed the critical thinking of foreign students, which have not yet been discussed. However, there is a limitation in not being able to analyze the entire discussion discourse.
