ABSTRACT

This article seeks ways to improve science classics reading classes. We review the short history of science classics reading classes in university general education in Korea. Based on the case study of Dongguk University's <“Nature and Technology” Great Books Seminar>, we try to derive some problems that need to pull up the process and contents of science classics reading classes. We propose some distinctions between reading program and follow-up programs. In reading program, effective use of mini-quizzes and question-and-answer classes were introduced as a way to independently promote text reading and text understanding. The use of class participation scores is proposed as an improvement plan. In the case of the follow-up program, the presentation/debate class emphasized the need for a new approach to group composition and presentation methodology, guaranteed the quality of presentations, and prepared ways for students to actively participate, while essay-writing relieved students of their burden and gave them a sense of accomplishment. The task was to come up with a new way to feel it. In addition to the introduction of a case study methodology for social debates in science and technology and the active use of (non) face-to-face interviews, it is proposed to encourage active use of electronic devices such as laptops and use class participation scores. Regarding essay-writing, linking the topics between presentations and essays is suggested as an improvement plan.
