ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to discuss the changes of Mu-hyeop (martial arts) novels from the 1990s to the mid-2000s, along with the transformation of the media. From the 1990s to the mid-2000s, the media and publishing market have transformed rapidly and the changes have influenced the genre. Mu-hyeop novels have been a major part of Korean popular culture since the 1960s and it had to adapt along with the cultural movements The most noticeable change happened in the early 2000s due to the change in the publishing system of Mu-hyeop novels. These problems coincided with the changes with the media, and these changes influenced the genre from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. With the full-scale introduction of ADSL technology, the rapid rise of the Internet has changed the consumption of Mu-hyeop novels. The lending libraries(대본소, 貸本所) and rental shops, which had been the main spots for consuming the novels are no longer the place for Mu-hyeop readers. These points have not been studied properly so far, and there is no research that deals with changes between PC communication and Internet media. This paper focused on Mu-hyeop novels, and insightful contributions have been made. The publishing system of Mu-hyeop novels has changed when transformed to the Internet Media. Through these changes, the length of the narrative was extended, and the scale of the narrative also exapaned. Mu-hyeop novels after the mid-90s, which now are commonly referred to “Shinmuhyeop,” (New mu-hyeop) can be divided into paper-type and bulletin board-type. Through this, the chracteristics of the genre novels at the tame can be discussed meaninghfully.
