ABSTRACT

This study presents a semiotic analysis of K-pop idol universe content/narrative. The ‘universe content/narrative’, which is considered one of the key factors in the global success of EXO (2012) and BTS (2013), has significantly influenced numerous Korean idol groups that debuted subsequently. In the K-pop cultural landscape, group-specific universes have become essential for self-branding and positioning. Since their debut in 2019, TXT has actively communicated with their fandom and the public through a unique fantasy-based universe narrative. Unlike other groups whose universe content either remains event-driven or concludes ambiguously due to internal circumstances, TXT has narratively imprinted their existence and image on domestic and international K-pop consumers through a series of universe content. This study employs Greimas's semiotic methodology to analyze three key videos from TXT's The Dream Chapter series—Nap of a Star, Magic Island, and Eternally. These videos, which mark the inception of TXT's narrative universe, are examined to elucidate their narrative structure and thematic consciousness. TXT's universe narrative extends the group's artistic vision beyond primary musical communication, creating a multidimensional framework that fosters deep emotional engagement within contemporary fandom. This narrative is structured around a series of interrelated thematic elements—“youth growth, exploration of self-identity, and transcendent salvation.” This approach not only evokes profound emotional resonance but also illuminates and expands the group's musical vision. From the “reflection on self-identity” in <Nap of a Star> ,through the “pursuit of deviation and freedom” in <Magic Island>, to the “salvation and transcendence” in <Eternally>, the organic series of visual narratives reproduces the message that TXT's music aspires to: “a group/world that grows together through dreams, hope, and solidarity.” Consequently, this study reflects on the structure and thematic consciousness of TXT's universe narrative, and further, tentatively proposes an exploration of the emotional relationship between the group's narrative vision and its impact on fandom and the public. In essence, the study seeks to highlight the social value and significance of K-pop idol universe content.
