ABSTRACT

Hwang, Seok-Yeong’s “Shim Chung” is a recreated literary work based on ancient novel. He discounted an important motive, and made Shim Chung as a new character. However, he succeeded to traditional a child of a concubine system as it is, and tried to overthrow the original text. That is to say, he performed these two opposite system, succession and overthrow, in harmony. On succession side, the image of the lotus reflected buddhistic respect is suggested as another name of Shim Chung, and the most important place, namely the sea king’s palace, acted as the same achievement, happiness space. Also, a life story which is classic novel’s epic settings and spatial recurrence process spread like a panorama in the hardship of Shim Chung’s life. On the other hand Hwang, Seok-Yeong tried to overthrow the original text, and the main character moves to international space and goes through the agony in historical situation of the Opium War, but the overthrow of the original text is brought out with the absence of Shim Bongsa. Finally, Shim Bongsa’s story is totally omitted. So the opening father’s eyes didn’t accomplish because Shim Chung’s life spreads in priority. In “Shim Chung”, unrealistic and fantastic structure is completely disappeared differently from the original. The blind’s party changes as the old people’s party and the purpose of the party becomes political justification to take care of people, not to open blind’s eyes. In other words, the motive that sublimates the value of medieval idea in the original “Shim Chung Jeon” is the opening eyes from filial piety. However, the setting of filial piety and gaining eyesight replaces a home for famine which reveals maternity, and the opening eyes is considered to another meaning of it and hope in Shim Chung’s painful growth process to realize mental sublimation and practice it instead of giving up her body. In conclusion, Hwang, Seok-Yeong’s “Shim Chung” is the same as “Shim Chung Jeon”, but another story of Shim Chung.
