AB - There are three common features between the dream and the fairy tale. First, they are basically made up of language. Second, they have the role in healing the pains of the real world in some senses. Third, the subversive imagination is possible which cannot come true in the real life. There are deeply concerned with the characteristic that the fairy tale depends on the fantastic and non-everyday narrative settings more than the other literatures. Children are the most vulnerable group physically and socially. They are apt to heal the pains through the fairy tales which they can’t cope with in the real life. They are more open-minded than adults to the transition of order or perspective of texts. For the children are rarely put in the established system. Consequently, fairy tales function as the healing and subversive literature.
In these days, Korean writers try to make use of the non-everyday narrative setting in fairy tales. If we devide the time and place of the literature into three dimensions (A:real world, B:semi-real world which lies between A and C, C: virtual world), Classical fantasy have mainly used the narrative structures which cross from A via B to C or conversely.
Nowadays, there are increasing numbers of realistic fairy tales, which is called ‘life fairy tales’, that stay in not only A but also B, introducing non-everyday narrative settings. It reflects the current life situation which is tough and competitive for Korean children.
Parodic fairy tales are now proceeding to reproduce new perspectives and values affected by pluralism. Life fairy tales tend to elaborately make use of non-everyday narrative settings in text so that non-everyday experiences practice the change of life beyond mental reward. Non-everyday experiences have the important role in healing the pains of the real world or criticizing its absurdity. These are some of the essential functions of the literature. While the dream is temporary, the fairy tale is lasting. When we wake up, the dream disappears. But the fairy tales continue to create new discourse.
