AB - This paper considers the meaning of the ‘book’ in Kim, Soo-Young’s poetry from the viewpoint of ‘reproduction of a text’ by analyzing his expression and thought on the ‘book’. He is a poet who cultivates himself and renders great services to the development of poetry and poetics with reading. Therefore, it is not so difficult to find his poetry that the ‘book’ is the main written subject.
In the initial period of his works, he regards the ‘book’ as objects that cannot be understood, since the ‘book’ in the world of his poetry is what cannot be accessible, what cannot be permitted to open and what cannot be opened, and thus, considers the type in the ‘book’ as a long chain of meaningless signs. In those days, the ‘book’ is not an organization of words of meanings but just a kind of closed form to him.
At the time of the 4ㆍ19 revolution and the 5ㆍ16 coup, his ‘book’ is connected with the reality constantly and states his views to the real world. Immediately after the 4ㆍ19 revolution, the ‘book’ shows a sight of the ideal that the actual should move toward and becomes a satirical symbol getting down to the earth. Since the 5ㆍ16 coup, the ‘book’ says the helplessness against the real world.
As appeared in the poetry of “A Huge Root” or “The History of Korean Literature”, his ‘book’ sets forth his views of the concealed past to the actual present and shows historicity of the present in the late period of his works. Thereby, his poetry marches into the world of freedom and love finally. Through the whole process of change of his poetry, there is the ‘book’ as a text. A creation of poetry induced by the thoughts on a text and the reading of the text reproduces a new script which describes recognition on the creation of the poetry as a text.
