ABSTRACT

This thesis analyzed storytelling strategy shown in Park, Chan-Wook’s <Old Boy>. <Old Boy>―Japanese cartoon is the original―was creatively transfigured from the original story. <Old Boy> shows the power of the organic composition. Chapter 2 ‘storytelling about imprisonment and imagination about desire’ analyzed narration about imprisonment. Oh, Dae-Soo spent fifiteen years in private jail, and was placed in an extreme situation his body and mind experienced. Oh, Dae-Soo wanted to know the reason he was put in jail, to shoot the crow, and to commit suicide. Chapter 3 ‘storytelling about memory and the transcendence of imagination’ analyzed narration about memory. Lee, Woo-Jin is still in his life in memory about an incestuous relationship he and his sister has had. His life purpose becomes free from this memory. His memory involves all happiness and unhappiness. Chapter 4 ‘storytelling about revenge and duplicity of nihilism’ analyzed narration about revenge. Revenge in this movie is run respectively by both Oh,Dae-Soo and Lee, Woo-Jin. Oh, Dae-Soo tried to avenge Lee, Woo-Jin, but this vengeance was the process that Lee, Woo-Jin was revenging Oh, Dae-Soo on his old enemy. <Old Boy>’s power is creativity in storytelling. This movie paraded ‘private jail’ that this incident happened and ‘incest’ that Lee, Woo-Jin and his sister had, not dealing with Korea movie. As stories about vengeance are famous for drama, revenge plot by directed Park, Chan-Wook means a lot.
