AB - Manhae Han Yong-un started to write novels in his late years and produced five works including two full-length novels, Heuk-Poong(Black Wind), Bak-Myeong(Short Life) and uncompleted works, Juk-Eum(Death), Hu-Hoi(Regret) and Cheolhyeol-Miin(the Iron Beauty). For Han, Yong-Un, novels were the products of the epoch and value system rather than the objects of his aesthetic achievement. Thus, a discussion of his novels focusing only on their internal values inevitably leads to the conclusion that his novels are unsuccessful and it produces biased perspective avoiding a fair assessment. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to analyze thematic consciousness of his novels manifested by the actions and value system of his female characters. First, Heuk-Poong embodies his theory of love on a social scale by showing the social love transforming the individual love to be the true love. Second, Bak-Myeong describes an ideal state of love and the heroine Soon-Young symbolizes the determination to sacrifice oneself for the country and society. Third, Juk-Eum is a love story of a woman who tries to realize the completion of her love overcoming various obstacles and even death. It summarizes the aspiration of Han, Yong-Un for the perfect love. He actualized the common themes of enlightenment and morality through the actions of women. Enlightenment and morality are expressed variously as individual, social or religious love through the values and actions of female characters. Actually the novels of Han, Yong-Un are related with his poetry as well as his achievement, actions and philosophy. Thus, it is necessary to depart from the idea of analyzing his novel separately and by itself. Instead, it is important to recognize his philosophical extraction underlying the author’s consciousness and fundamental principle of his novels. The novels of Han, Yong-Un rely rather on the value of the history of thoughts than the aesthetic or technical values. Thus his novels need to be reexamined by various methods for they should be understood based on the aspects of philosophical background, social structure and orientation.
