ABSTRACT

Park Eun-shik(1859~925) lived in the period of great change and experienced various old and new cultural style. In the literature, he wrote various prose works in traditional style and accepted new theory from modern China simultaneously. His essay in 1907, “the preface to Seosa- geungukji”, was the result of his experience and effort, and it had been well appreciated as a example of utilitarian literary theory in his period. In this paper, I researched the context and background of his utilitarian literary theory. As a matter of fact he accepted the logical terms and argument of Liang Chi-chao. But the purpose of essay was different. Park had focused on the utility of literature, so he considered continuously not “how” but “what” to write. So he studied the significant affair and the greate men in history as good subject matter of the literary works. As the background of Park' utilitarian literary theory, two kind of elements are pointed out in this paper. One is Park’ critical and traditional viewpoint on the proes, the other is the circumstance of the times. Those two elements had forced him to concentrate the matter of utility, so his approach to the modification of literary style was not advanced after all.
