Debate guiding method through ‘Role debate’

ABSTRACT

If the purpose of debate instruction is to enhance the debate ability, it is important to have rich experience through debate training. However, examples of debate classes of the current school education show many insufficiencies to enhance the basic abilities of the debate ability, such as critical thinking, communication, creative problem solving. One of them is to perceive a debate as a field of conflict or opposition, which fails to induce interests or motivation of learners. In this paper, a debate guiding method based on 'Role Playing debate (Role debate)' is proposed, from the perspective that a debate should be experienced as a field of communication that leads to the harmonious solution of problems, with the understanding and appreciation of participants being at the center. The meaning of the role debate activity as a debate guiding method is let each student confirm his/her own thought and listen to other's opinion through the reflection on the given role and, therefore, to encourage active involvement of students and let them create further debate experience through sympathy and communication.
