ABSTRACT

This paper presents an analysis of Han Yong-woon's modern ideas and character embodiment patterns in his five novels with a focus on 『Heuk-poong』and 『Bak-meong』. His novels have not received as much attention as his poems because they are considered to have a lower literary completion level, but there should be diverse analyses of his novels in order to understand his ideas and literary world as a whole. In 『Heuk-poong』, Wang-han specifies Han's free consciousness in which individual and social freedom are intertwined based on the Buddhist belief that every creature and thing is equal. In the novel, "Wang-han" and "Chang-sun" that realize and practice modern values identify individual ego as social ego and individual freedom as social freedom and practice them by participating in the revolution. The characters of 『Bak-meong』practice love for humanity through the whole person image instead of taking personal part in revolutions or radical social reforms. The female protagonist "Sun-young" specifies the practice ethics for the public life by practicing universal love beyond personal gains. In 『Heuk-poong』, 『Bak-meong』,and 『Jeuk-um』, the characters specify the multi-layered values during the modern enlightenment period. Each pattern of actions moves toward the state that is higher by a stage called true freedom beyond the microscopic oppression. Han stroke harmony between individual freedom and social equality and created modern persons practicing in reality through the selection and action patterns of his characters.
