ABSTRACT

This study is considering the food representation in Korean Classical Prose, especially jeongi soseol, pansori novel and yadam. The food in fictional biograpy, which represents the symbol of connection between live man and dead man, in other words, worldly person and the other world person, is far from daily food representation. It contrasts with the daily routine food representation of pansori novel and unofficial historical tale. In case of pansori novel food representation is functioning 'appetite fantasy' which incites appetite and satisfies it through 'rhetoric expression'. That fantasy is double-sided, that is, which shows the abundance of food in Ch'un-hyang-jeon, while in Heung-bu-jeon shows the hunger from the lack of food. The food representation shows sharp contrast of affluence and deficiency. In case of unofficial historical tale, extreme sense of lack caused by irresistable poverty and its sufficiency consists of the core of the prose, and there food is sometimes symbol of power and sometimes symbol of extreme thrift. The literal study about food representation is very important, I thik, in respect of its contribution to the in-depth consideration about Life-history through human internal emotion and desire towards the food.
