Cooking as Spectacles, Eating as Communication : Considerations on the Foods represented in the Musicals

ABSTRACT

This study aims at observing how the Musical Theatre represents foods through viewing the foods utilized in some shows as free motif as well as Leitmotif respectably. Although the foods in Musical Theatre are hardly staged due to the fundamental difficulties for staging, “Daejangkum”(2007) and “The midnight Restaurant”(2012) made the best use of foods as Leitmotif, which the most important element for signifying the text among original Korean Musicals. This is because the foods were both the primary concern for interpretation of texts and staging method. Musical “Daejangkum” changed the micro spectacles of foods into the massive spectacles which is appropriated to the Grand Theatre show. The Foods in the original TV drama “Daejangkum” were everything and the text focused on the “cooking hand” of Jangkum playing as the most skillful food specialist. Additionally, the drama of Musical mainly focused on cooking Jangkum who invented the idealized taste covered with the cook’s sincerity and then transformed into a heroin overcoming all the critical situations with the knowledge of foods. It was unevitable that other antagonists failed to be highly probable and powerful. These changes seemed to be the result of a market-oriented strategy which would be capable Musical “Daejangkum” to be the best show among the grand original Korean Musicals in 2007. Meanwhile, “The midnight Restaurant” shed light on the actual “eating” on stage rather than massive spectacles of foods. This musical aimed at maximizing the reality when staging the text encompassing from make-believe to the actual performance. This can be a result by the decision of creators who accepted the wide-spread recognition, “The midnight Restaurant-ness” by the public. “The midnight Restaurant-ness” can be said an affectivity which satisfies the urban fantasy issuing simplicity as well as sincerity. However, it seems to be hardly avoidable that the reason why the essence of the text, “Sensus Communis” was directed “double immediacy” is subject to the commercial stage. In this context, the foods in musical can be utilized as the element both on the usefulness condensing the drama and on the commercial utility.
