ABSTRACT

As the number of immigrants in Korean society increases, the percentage of female immigrants married to Korean men is also increasing. These married immigrant women are faced with an unfamiliar culture in which communication and food are a struggle. The purpose of this study is to approach the combined communication and food problem that married immigrant women are experiencing from the perspective of second language education, especially Korean language textbooks using cooking. The purpose of this study is to suggest improvements based on problems found by analyzing already issued textbooks so as to develop proper textbooks that fulfill immigrant women’s needs and expectations. This study chose three Korean language textbooks using cooking for immigrant women. I attempted to largely divide and review the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of these textbooks. In particular in regard to the intrinsic characterization of the Korean textbooks, I examined whether these textbooks are focused on learner-centered teaching and whether interculturalism is faithfully reflected. The three textbooks consist mainly of simple cooking recipes and frequently used Korean language found in recipes and daily life. Considering the discontinuous learning situations of married immigrant women, the content is designed not to be dense so teachers can adapt the lessons and content to reflect the needs of the learners. However, these textbooks are unable to reflect the learner’s personal experiences, nor are they able to facilitate personalization of learning. In addition, the textbooks are unilaterally crammed with information on Korean ingredients, food, and culture while little care or commitment to the interculturalism of immigrant women can be seen. Namely, these textbooks do not reflect interculturalism. Textbooks using cooking should be based on interculturalism, they must be tailored to the needs of the learner, and the autonomy of the learner must be guaranteed.
