ABSTRACT

In this study, we analyzed simplified expressions representing economy of effort in internet mediated language, and character by age. The results of this study can be summarized as below: First, Teenagers and those in their 20s exhibited word formative characteristics of internet mediated language in various ways from phonologic and morphological aspects. Those in their 30s and 40s expressed everyday words in simplified forms based on simple principle of word formation. Second, use of simplified expressions was frequent due to slangs and jargons among teenagers and those in their 20s and for the sake of convenience among those in their 30s and 40s. Third, teenagers and those in their 20s revealed closed and self-expressive characteristics of internet mediated language while those in their 30s and 40s revealed open and allocentric characteristics of internet mediated language. This study is significant in that it took substantive approach to sociological phenomenon of internet medicated language by age.
