ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify the reason why the aspect of change of [deo+si]>[si+deo] is shown to be different before the connective suffix ‘-ni(니)’ and ‘-ndʌin(ㄴᄃᆡᆫ)’ in 15th century Korean language. Both ‘-ndʌin’ and ‘-ni’ were grammaticalized around 13th century and came to accept the change in ‘-deo-’ combination sequence as connective suffixes upon the occurrence of change [deo+si]>[si+deo] in early 15th century. However, the difference in the process of original composition or formation of ‘-ndʌin’, which was grammaticalized in syntactic configuration of [[adnominal ending ‘-n’#bound noun ‘dʌ’] + locative case ‘ʌi’ + semantic marker ‘n’] and ‘-ni’ formed from the final ending ‘-nira’ is that apparently the connective suffix ‘-ndʌin’ was placed under the influence of the adnominal ending ‘-n’ while the connective suffix ‘-ni’ was put under the influence of the final ending ‘-nira’. Against this backdrop, the change of [deo+si]>[si+deo] before ‘-ndʌin’ seems to be closer to the aspect of change before the adnominal ending ‘-n’ rather than that before the connective suffix ‘-ni’. When it comes to the change in temproal system, however, it is noticeable that the adnominal ending ‘-n’ that features conservative aspect contrarily took the lead in change of ‘-deo-’ combination sequence. The issue of adnominal ending ‘-n’ related to the change of prefinal ending combination sequence seems to be worth further researches in the future.
