AB - The objective of this research is on examining the necessity of public language improvement and the patterns of public language use in Jeju public institutions.
The key point of public language is the fact that public language users are general public and unspecified individuals regardless of who the language producers are. Therefore, public language should be written in a way that general public can have easy access to it. After The Framework Act on the Korean Language Law was established in 2005, language officials were appointed in governmental institutions and local agencies to encourage proper and easy public language use, and Public Language Supporter Center was established in National Institute of the Korean Language. Besides, all local government institutions competed to enact The Ordinance on Promotion of the Korean Language As a result of surveying the number of errors in documents posted in the homepage in 2010 and 2015, looks very similar results. This shows that, despite the several efforts to improve the use of public language, the practical use of public language has not been changed drastically.
To improve the use of public language, the government, government institutions, administrative staff, and all citizens need to show interest on the matter. Not only the government has to make related policy, but also all officials of government institutions have to improve their consciousness about the use of public language. To expect practical changes on the use of public language, it is crucial to support administrative workers to understand why it is necessary to use public language in easier way and practice in real life. Moreover, it is feasible only with the cooperation and interest from all citizens.
