ABSTRACT

This study aims to show how Nobi was perceived in the Joseon Dynasty by examining the presences of Nobi described in the Korean classical narratives. The scope is limited to Korean folktales and classical novels. This study attempts to focus on Nobi not as the subjugated but as the subjective human being. This study concludes that Nobi is observed in the classical narratives as the four categories as follows: (1)A labor provider, a producer and a manager: infrastructure of the social system (2) A caregiver, a protector, and an agent for the Nobi-owner: protection of and accompanied growth with the immature Nobi-owner (3)An implicit competitor or an active antagonist: a possible transformation as a jealous antagonist (4)An experienced advisor or a strategic behaviorist: an assistant to or antagonist against the Nobi-owner. The study of Nobi should be broken away from stereotypical images of tragic subjugated figures; instead, it should extend its scope to perceive Nobi as an active and three-dimensional character. This study claims that it is Nobi’s “strong will for life” that creates these new active images. This study suggests that Nobi should be analyzed as a human being with persistent will for life, not only as a stereotypical “resistant” figure under “oppression.” This study observes that the Nobi-owner/Yangban officially and legally subjugates Nobi because they recognizes their lives depend on and coexist with Nobi. Such a perception is secretly reflected in the fictional world of folk tales and classical novels.
