ABSTRACT

This research extended from concerning about how the harsh life of Nobi was materialized in classic novels. Regardless of era and country, usually the public was used and sacrificed for political tools. In Joseon era, when had a rigid caste system, it was especially harsh. The ruling class Yangban had every authority and wealth. But the life of public was secondary condition subordinated to the Yangban. Especially the slaves Nobi considered as Yangban's possessions were treated as stocks, cows or horses. They weren't treated as a human, because they are considered as a property of their owners. Furthermore, there is no exception to the sin and punishment. The owners punished their "Nobi" as their pleases, even though there was government law to follow. Inequality to Nobi is clearly exposed in classic literature which one set at the time of Joseon Era. They are Sahyang of 「Sookhyang Jeon」, Maewol of「Sookyoung nangja Jeon」and Teuk of「Woonyoung Jeon」. They clearly express themselves in the novels. This research paper focus on this point. The point is the behavior patterns of three Nobis, who act on their own willingness not for their owners. However they are also punished in the end of the novels, because their free will also originated by wrong desire. Punishments for Nobi were still inequality in both literatures and real world. Nobody cares about those reasons of their behaviors since they are in humble station in their real life. This research will analyze unfair circumstance through 3 characters who had their own voice even though they were the weak who couldn't exert sovereignty easily.
