ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the differences in semantic representation between the two Koreas in terms of Cognitive Linguistics with a focus on “focal adjustment,” a cognitive analytical mechanism utilized in the process of representing the meanings of words. In this study, the three factors of “selection,” “perspective,” and “abstraction,” which are the key components of focal adjustment, were categorized into four types as follows: (1) selection and perspective influence as intermediaries, but perspective serves as the determinant of the difference between the refining words; (2) all three factors influence as intermediaries, but the deterministic variable comprising the difference in derived values is abstraction; (3) selection and perspective act as both mediated and determinative variables; and (4) all three factors influence as intermediaries, but only selection and abstraction act as deterministic variables conveying the difference between the derived values. The results obtained by this study could help to elucidate the differences in the abilities of focal adjustment on language user, such as ‘profile-based organization,’ ‘figure-ground organization,’ and ‘profiling.’ The results of this study should therefore be supported with further research characterizing the cognitive differences in the main body of language shared by the two Koreas according to the characteristics of the formal and hierarchical level of the Korean language.
