ABSTRACT

This article is the result of examining the ways of expressing old age in Sijo's works. In this paper, I looked at how to express old age through two types of materials. They are nature and human beings. The cases of expressing old age by bringing natural objects into the works are divided into three subtypes: contrast expressions that pay attention to the differences between the poetic self and natural objects, analogical expressions that pay attention to the similarities between the two, and ambivalant expressions that reveal both differences and similarities. There are many examples of Sijo works that draw out various human beings that are distinguished from the poetic self, and the human beings used in the material are heterogeneous others who contrast with old speakers such as boys, young people or young girls. In other cases, they may be sympathetic others, such as lover who the poetic self loves and parents or wages who are the targets of ideological values such asfilial piety or loyalty. Or they may be the young mind of the poetic self. Looking back at the works discussed in this paper, according to the poetic speaker's point of view of the world, if the speaker perceives the world as homogeneous with self, there is a tendency to show relatively less sadistic sentiments, such as mourning or feeling sorry for old age. The lament of old age is more frequent and stronger in the heterogeneous view than in the homogeneous view of the world and the self. Speakers with a homogenous view of the world have more optimistic and positive attitudes. They may calmly accept their old age as the providence of nature, discover a point of comfort from the world, try to forget the sadness of old age while enjoying something wonderful like a splendid view or a drink, and emphasize the indifference between old and young.
